nh POST 108 Junior Shooting Sports Club

Begun in 2003, Chester American Legion Post 108 sponsors a 10 meter air rifle shooting course in accordance with the nationwide Legion program. The program is designed to teach gun safety, self-discipline, and marksmanship for both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 17. All necessary equipment is provided for the full school year running from September to June of the following year.

Beginning students receive 4 consecutive weeks of classroom instruction at the Legion Hall in Chester center before going to the range for the first time on week 5. Classroom work includes shooting safety, rifle function, range procedures, shooting positions, and dry firing. Classroom work finishes with a written exam.

Week 5 the beginners shoot for the first time at the Chester Rod and Gun Club which generously donates the use of their facilities on Thursday nights. After weeks 5 the new shooters alternate weeks with the advanced group of students. The year ends in mid-June with an awards dinner where trophies are awarded to the top 3 shooters in each group along with the most consistent and most improved kids.
